CorCom, the region’s common body of major rebel groups, pay revolutionary tribute to Haipou Jadonang on his 91st death anniversary, which is observed on August 29.
The statement issued by the media coordinator, M.Sak-hen, said Haipou Jadonang is a leader who fought against the British Empire for the freedom of the nation.
The supreme sacrifice he gave on August 29, 1931 for his motherland has now become an event of extreme importance to the present and upcoming generations, it said.
After Kangliepak (Manipur) was colonised by the British Empire in 1891 at the dawn of the 20th century, Haipou Jadonang was born in 1905 at Kambiron village in Tamenglong as a child of “Thiudai” and “Tabonliu”.
It said that since his childhood, he had been a brave individual who had love and affection for his motherland. At the time, Jadonang resolved to fight against the British-instituted system of using villagers as labour by state officials during their trips and taxation imposed on them, according to the report.
His rebellion against the British ignited the movement for self-determination amongst the people to fight for independence from colonial rule.
It said that he believed that preserving the indigenous culture and traditions of the people could be the key to exposing the hidden agenda of the colonial government and protecting the people as well.
His movement for self-determination constantly disrupted the plans and efforts of the British colonisers. This made the British officials plot a plan to eliminate him forever.
Jadonang was apprehended in Binakandi, Cachar, on February 19, 1928. In such a hasty manner, he was hanged near the bank of the Nambul River on the backside of Imphal Central Jail on August 29, 1931, it added.
The CorCom appealed to the general public of both the hills and valley to work together to restore the sovereignty of Manipur.
